Deep in the remote Santa Elena Mountains of Honduras, Maria Adela farms a small plot of land. This year, she only produced four bags of coffee, and we were lucky enough to buy the entire lot. This coffee is part of an exciting new chapter in coffee production spearheaded by the non-profit Catracha Coffee, which allows roasters to directly support farmers in a transparent, trustworthy way. In the cup, Maria's coffee has a sweet tea fragrance, ripe banana mouth feel, and a comforting complex body.

Headed by Mayra Orellana-Powell and her husband Lowell, Catracha Coffee Company and their sister company, Catracha Community, are non profits dedicated to improving the quality of the coffee coming out of the Santa Elena mountains, thereby improving the quality of life for the people in that community. Catracha uses a profit sharing model where they buy the coffee directly from the producers at above market prices and work with importers to get the coffees into the specialty market. Once a roaster purchases the green coffee, 100% of the profits from that sale are returned to the producer. This allows producers to re-invest in their farms and break out of the cycle of subsistence farming. Now that Mayra and her husband are back living in Honduras, they are able to teach farmers the best practices to improve their crops. They keep diligent logs of all the pertinent information from every harvest so they can continue improving from year to year. We are honored to be able to work with a company like Catracha.
