Grown in the mountains of the Ginkongoro prefecture in south-central Rwanda and processed at the Remera washing station near the village of Karaba, this coffee is unique for its region. Whiskey lovers will appreciate the name of this coffee’s varietal—bourbon. Buf Cafe is privately owned by the Muhirwa family and primarily works with coffee from both the Cobabakagi and Terimbere Kawa Yacu Co-Ops. At Remera, the coffee is processed by Rwandan standards beginning with a sort by floatation tank, then a dry fermentation followed by a second sort by water shoot. The coffee is then washed and hand sorted before a final drying on raised beds on the mountain valley floor. This 100% bourbon selection is very smooth with notes of lemongrass, hazelnut and caramel.
